About Mary Frances
Mary Frances Leahy is a talented musician hailing from Ontario, who specializes in playing the fiddle, piano, and dancing. She has been performing since the age of five and has already amassed over 600 live performances in Canada and the U.S. Mary Frances is the eldest of seven siblings and has developed her own unique style blending her Celtic heritage with jazz and Latin genres.
Her debut recording features all original material showcasing this fusion. Mary Frances has accomplished a lot at a young age including performing with Yo-Yo Ma, composing two songs on her parents' new release, and appearing on various TV shows. She recently won a Cape Breton Tourism music contest for her original comp “First Light".
Read below a glowing review of Mary France’s first record, “First Light,” from Jenna Melanson of Canadian Beats:
“The clarity and breadth of her vision are in full display on the album’s showcase singles. “Cheerio” has a traditional Celtic jauntiness that veers into another realm entirely when Rosendo “Chendy” León’s Latin percussion comes in; there’s even an all-rhythm interlude that’s guaranteed to inspire euphoric pandemonium on the dance floor. Meanwhile, the bittersweet “Silhouette LeBert” shows off a completely different yet utterly complementary side to Leahy’s repertoire. It’s a gorgeous and gentle waltz with an achingly romantic, “final dance of the evening” feel. You can just see the last couple to leave the supper club staring adoringly into each other’s eyes as the janitor leans on his broom and checks his watch.”
With familial roots in the area, Mary Frances is right at home on the Broad Cove stage. Her performance promises to be remembered for years to come….
